A landslide triggered by heavy rains in the Iranian capital killed at least four people on Thursday, Iranian state television reported.
The report said heavy rains early on Thursday caused heavy rains and then landslides in the northwestern part of Tehran and damaged the shrine of Imamzade Daoud, a religious shrine in the city. He added that “rescue teams were dispatched to the site and nine people were injured as a result of the accident” and pointed out that “others may be buried under the mud, search work is underway.”
The landslide occurred in a valley on the slopes of the Alborz Mountains in Tehran. In 2015, flooding in the area killed at least 14 people.
Prior to the landslide, officials had warned residents in Tehran’s mountainous regions of heavy rains and possible flooding. They also warned that heavy rain is expected on Thursday. Heavy torrential rains killed at least 21 people on Saturday in the drought-stricken southern province of Fars and hit more than 10 villages in the province.
