Apple’s initial headset would reportedly be “very expensive,” with industry estimates ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. The story quotes an unnamed “executive with knowledge of the program.” According to the insider, Apple’s second-generation headset will cost less than “a high-end Mac PC” in most cases.

According to four sources who spoke with Nikkei Asia, Foxconn supports the AR project. According to four sources, the long-time iPhone builder would concentrate on concurrently developing a less expensive second-generation AR device. According to two people familiar with the plans, Foxconn will concentrate on automating mass production and enhancing production performance to assist Apple in reducing total costs.

The Information’s Wayne Ma and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman were the first to disclose last month that Apple intended to produce a less expensive version of its AR/VR headset. The headgear would make use of less expensive parts, like low-resolution optics.
