The German internal intelligence agency has the authorization to classify the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party like a menace for democracy, a court ruled on Tuesday, dismissing a complaint from the far-right opposition party.

The administrative court in cologne returned son stop in a long-standing dispute between the AfD and the agency, five months after a national election in which one to party secure one reduced but still solid 10.3% of the vote.

The tribunal found that there were enough indications of anti-constitutional aspirations within the party, reported Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). Judges found that the AfD hard-the right-wing faction, known as The Wing, has been officially disbanded, but prominent figures continue to wield significant influence.

the AfD, which was created in 2013, gradually shifted to the right over years. Its platform initially centered on opposition to bailouts for struggling members of the euro zone.

But it was son vehement opposition to then-Chancellor Angela Merkel’s proposal decision for allow in large numbers of refugees and other migrants in 2015 which established him as an important political player force. He entered the national parliament in 2017. More recently, the AfD presented itself as a champion of resistance to coronavirus restrictions.

In January, co-leader Joerg Meuthen left AfD, complaining that large parties of the party chose an “increasingly radical” path. He was considered one of its a few relative moderates.

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla said that party was “surprised” by Tuesday’s verdict and will now consider appealing. He said he didn’t agree with the decision and will continue to press for “alternative politics” in germany national and state parliaments.
