In a matter of hours, Johnson managed to gather support from the three Republicans who voted present in Tuesday’s nomination vote: Reps. Mark Amodei of Nevada, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and French Hill of Arkansas. Moreover, Wisconsin GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who is still overseas in Israel, is expected to support Johnson, reducing the margin of potential loss.

Former President Trump Backs Johnson

Former President Trump has endorsed Johnson, urging Republicans to swiftly secure his appointment as House speaker. Trump expressed his confidence in Johnson, praising his respectability and predicting a successful tenure.

Johnson is the fourth candidate proposed by the House GOP for the position of House speaker since McCarthy’s removal.

Johnson’s Plan for Government Funding

Johnson outlined his plan for funding the government if elected, including support for a stop-gap bill that extends beyond November 17 until either January 15 or April 15, depending on the consensus reached by a member working group. Johnson also aims to pass the remaining appropriations bill by the week of November 13, with considerations for FY25 appropriations bills in May and June. He proposes no break for the district work period in August unless all appropriations bills have passed the House, and aims to conclude negotiations on the National Defense Authorization Act by September. Additionally, Johnson pledges to “EXPAND OUR MAJORITY” in his plans for the year ahead.
