How Hugh Jackman’s R-Rated Robin Hood Rebounded From a Pixar Box Office Clash

Hugh Jackman’s gritty reimagining of a folk legend has found a second life on digital platforms, overcoming a difficult summer theatrical window to become a fixture on home viewing charts. The Death of Robin Hood reached the digital top 10 following its initial Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) release, signaling a shift in the film’s commercial trajectory.

The R-rated historical drama has seen success on digital charts. By July 30, 2026, shortly after its home release, the film had already climbed to the 8th most-watched position in the United States Apple TV store, marking a “digital redemption” for a project that initially struggled to find its footing during a crowded summer at the cinema.

Theatrical Challenges and Counter-Programming

The film’s current streaming success stands in contrast to its theatrical performance. Released on June 19, 2026, The Death of Robin Hood was positioned as adult-oriented counter-programming against Pixar’s massive family blockbuster, Toy Story 5. The clash proved difficult for the darker, R-rated epic; the film grossed approximately $9.5 million at the global box office against a production budget of $20 million.

While the theatrical returns did not recoup the initial investment, the film’s transition to digital rental and purchase platforms suggests that the target audience preferred the home viewing experience for such a somber, revisionist take on the character. Directed as a deconstructionist drama rather than a traditional action-adventure, the story features a battle-worn, aged version of the titular outlaw portrayed by Jackman.

Transition to Subscription Streaming

For viewers waiting to watch the film as part of a subscription service rather than a standalone rental, the next major milestone is approaching. The Death of Robin Hood is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on October 16, 2026. This move to a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform is expected to further expand the film’s reach following its successful PVOD run.

The film has earned particular praise for its cast and mature tone. Alongside Jackman, the production stars Jodie Comer as Sister Brigid and Bill Skarsgård as Little John. Rated R for strong bloody violence, the narrative moves away from the “Merry Men” tropes of previous iterations, focusing instead on a grounded, brutal end to the legend’s life. Critics have noted Jackman’s performance as a career standout, often drawing comparisons to his gritty work in the 2017 film Logan.
