How Video Games Like Zelda and Noita Apply Brandon Sanderson’s Hard Magic Laws

Brandon Sanderson’s influence on the fantasy genre is often defined by his “Hard Magic” systems—worlds where magic operates under rigid, logical rules that the reader can learn and predict. As the author expands his presence in the gaming industry, this philosophy is increasingly being used as a lens to evaluate game mechanics. According to a September 2026 interview, Mistborn remains his priority for a potential video game adaptation because its “Allomancy” system is inherently mechanical and suited for interactive play.

While a full-scale AAA Mistborn title has yet to materialize following the 2017 cancellation of Mistborn: Birthright, the author’s design ethos is already present in several modern titles. For players seeking that same level of logical consistency and tactical depth, certain games stand out for treating magic as a science rather than a vague plot device.

Sanderson’s First Law as a Design Manual

The core of Sanderson’s approach is found in Sanderson’s First Law of Magic, which states that a creator’s ability to solve problems with magic is proportional to how well the audience understands that magic. In gaming, this translates to systems where a player can predict an outcome based on established rules rather than relying on scripted events or “mana” bars that simply deplete without physical consequence.

A prime example of this is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Its “Fuse” and “Ultrahand” systems operate on a set of consistent physical and magical rules. When a player attaches a Ruby to an arrow, it consistently produces a fire blast because the game’s elemental logic is absolute. This allows for creative problem-solving that feels earned, as the player is utilizing their understanding of the world’s “Hard Magic” to overcome obstacles.

In systems like Zelda's 'Fuse' or 's wand-building, magic is governed by physical and elemental logic.

Simulated Magic and Physical Logic

Few games capture the “limitation over power” principle as effectively as Noita. The game utilizes a true-to-physics wand-building system where every pixel in the world is simulated. Magic in Noita is not just a visual effect; it is a chemical and physical reaction. Players must construct spells by understanding how different “modifiers” interact with “projectiles,” often leading to dangerous but logical chain reactions. This mirrors Sanderson’s belief that the most interesting part of a magic system is not what it can do, but what it cannot do—and the consequences of pushing those boundaries.

Sanderson has already demonstrated his interest in these types of rigid mechanics through his direct work in the industry. He contributed to the world-building and mechanical foundations of Moonbreaker and the Infinity Blade series. In Moonbreaker particularly, the focus on specific unit abilities and “Ship Assists” reflects a tabletop-like precision where every move has a predictable, rule-bound result.

Upcoming Releases and the 2026 Roadmap

For those waiting for a direct translation of Sanderson’s work into a playable format, 2026 marks a significant milestone for the Cosmere. The tabletop sector is seeing immediate movement.

The Mistborn Handbook for the Cosmere RPG is scheduled for its full retail release on November 16, 2026. This follows a successful digital rollout in September and is designed to codify Allomancy and Feruchemry into a playable system that maintains the strict limitations found in the novels.

Until then, the games that best honor Sanderson’s legacy are those that force the player to think like an Allomancer: understanding the costs, respecting the rules, and finding victory through the creative application of limitations.
