French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky about the situation at the Moscow-controlled Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which was bombed.
Russian troops occupied the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest, in early March, at the start of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
There have been several explosions at the site since late July, and both sides have exchanged accusations about it. There were also fears of a nuclear holocaust, prompting the UN Security Council to meet last Thursday.
Zelenskiy warned on Monday evening that if a “catastrophe” occurred in Zaporozhye, all of Europe would be at risk, accusing the Russian army of “bombarding nearby cities and towns” on the spot.
The last phone call between the two presidents dates from Aug. 1, when Macron welcomed the resumption of maritime grain shipments from southern Ukraine after they were suspended due to a Russian attack.
