French President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived in Washington on an official visit, said that the West would not put pressure on Ukraine to force it to negotiate with Russia.
Macron said this during a joint press conference he held with US President Joe Biden on Thursday in Washington, answering a question whether he and Biden discussed the possibility of holding Russian-Ukrainian talks, given the hardships of the winter season and the energy crisis, “We We will never put pressure on Ukraine to make concessions, this is unacceptable for it.”
“If we want to achieve a lasting peace, we must respect the Ukrainians and that they, and only they, have the right to choose the terms and conditions of negotiations,” he added.
Earlier, The Washington Post reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden asked the Ukrainian leadership to be open to negotiations with Russia.
