North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un may travel to Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin

A U.S. official stated on Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might soon travel to Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin is reportedly seeking military equipment to support its war efforts in Ukraine.

The official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, mentioned that the trip is expected to take place within the month. Although the exact location and date of the meeting are uncertain, the Pacific port city of Vladivostok appears to be a likely choice due to its proximity to North Korea.

Last month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited Pyongyang in an attempt to convince North Korea to sell artillery ammunition to Russia, according to National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.

Watson stated, “We have information that Kim Jong Un anticipates further discussions, including diplomatic engagement at the leader level in Russia.”

The U.S. is urging North Korea to halt its arms negotiations with Russia and adhere to its public commitments of refraining from providing or selling arms to Russia, as stated by Watson.

On Monday, Shoigu mentioned that the two countries may conduct joint military exercises.

The New York Times initially reported that Kim planned to meet with Putin in Russia this month.

Last week, the White House revealed that intelligence indicated a letter exchange between Putin and Kim following Shoigu’s visit. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby described the letters as “superficial,” but confirmed progress in Russian-North Korean talks regarding a weapons sale.
