Oil Tanker Breaks Down in Suez Canal
On Sunday, tugboats belonging to the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority managed to move an oil tanker whose engines broke while crossing the canal. George Safwat, spokesman for the Suez Canal Authority, said the oil tanker broke down in the canal on Sunday, which disrupted traffic on the world’s waterway.
Mechanical Failure
Safwat stated that a Malta-flagged vessel suffered a mechanical failure at the 12th kilometer of the canal, and also said that the canal administration deployed 3 boats to tow the tanker and allow other vessels to cross the fairway.
Resuming Navigation
For his part, the head of the administration of the Suez Canal, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, said that the southern convoy is working well, stressing that navigation through the Suez Canal will be resumed within an hour at the most.
The Suez Canal is a crucial waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing ships to avoid the long and dangerous trip around the southern tip of Africa. Any disruption to the canal’s operations can have significant impacts on global trade and shipping.
