An Israeli army spokesman told AFP that Palestinians had gathered near Silwad, noting that “several suspects threw stones at civilian vehicles passing by on Route 60 (one of the main roads through the occupied West Bank), putting them at risk.” She added: “The soldiers on the spot made the arrests through normal practice and, as a last resort, used live ammunition.”
A statement from the Fatah movement, led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, mourns the boy Hamid and says in a statement distributed in placard form: “Today, the moon from Silvad joins the procession of martyrs.”
Silvad is located north of Ramallah, and a few meters away is the Israeli settlement of Ofra, next to the Israeli army camp.
