Police in the Indian state of Kerala said dozens of people were injured in clashes with demonstrators demanding the release of a man arrested while demonstrating against a $900 million port development project in the state. Protesters, mostly fishermen, say the project is responsible for coastal erosion. Authorities said protesters broke into the police station, took hostages and threatened to burn it down.
The escalation of protests is a major problem for Adani’s $23 billion port and logistics operations. The port’s location on the southern tip of India is vital to securing operations from the ports of Dubai, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Construction work at the port of Whisingham was halted for more than three months after protesters, mostly fishermen, blocked the entrance, blaming the project for eroding the coast and depriving them of their livelihood.
Over the weekend, protesters prevented Adani’s construction equipment from entering the port despite a court order to resume work, and authorities arrested many of them.
