There was a push in the number of racist, xenophobic and anti-religious offenses in France in 2021, according to an annual report published by the Ministry of the Interior on Friday.
analysis of the racist offenses were prepared by the statistical service of the ministry for homeland security and released in advance of March 21, International Day for elimination of Racial discrimination.
The ministry said racist crimes were mainly committed out by uttering insults, insults, provocations and public defamation of victims belonging to Africans countries or those from minority backgrounds were “little reported” to security forces.
Racism is vastly under-reported in France and according to national Commission on Human Rights, it often manifests itself in forms of subtle rejection, which the victims find difficult to characterize and denounce.
Despite the ubiquity of these crimes and the reluctance of the victims – who were identified as predominantly male African nationals – to report crimes, the study indicates that almost 12,500 hate crimes were recorded by the police and gendarmerie. Of these, 6,300 offenses were found to be in high or middle level crime Category.
the total number of incidents jumped 16% compared to 2020.
the rise in racist crimes have been observed in the context of extension of the pandemic and the long periods of confinement last year indicates the report.
