Reddit is moving to further restrict its once-open data ecosystem as it migrates developers toward its proprietary Developer Platform. This transition represents a significant shift for the platform’s data accessibility policies.
The phase-out includes a series of technical cutoffs designed to migrate developers toward Reddit’s proprietary Developer Platform. According to the current timeline, Reddit will stop accepting new requests for public API access on October 31, 2026.
The End of Unauthenticated Access
The enclosure of Reddit’s data is not limited to API keys. The platform is also targeting legacy methods of data retrieval that have long been used by researchers, third-party developers, and casual users. A critical milestone in this process is scheduled for May 30, 2026, when Reddit plans to disable all unauthenticated .json endpoints. These endpoints currently allow users to view subreddit data in a structured format simply by appending “.json” to a URL; after the cutoff, these requests are expected to return 403 Forbidden errors.
Reddit is directing community managers toward internal tools for certain automated functions. For moderators who currently rely on RSS for automated alerts, Reddit recommends migrating those workflows to the “Discord Relay” app within its Developer Platform (Devvit).
Restricting ‘Old Reddit’ and Legacy Interfaces
The platform is also tightening the requirements for accessing its legacy interface, “Old Reddit” (old.reddit.com). Access to the 2018-era layout is being restricted to logged-in users who have actively used that specific layout within the last six months. This restriction is intended to prevent bot-driven scrapers from using the lightweight, low-obfuscation legacy interface to harvest large volumes of text without participating in the site’s modern ecosystem.
By forcing interactions through the Reddit Developer Platform and authenticated accounts, the company gains greater oversight of who is accessing its data and for what purpose. This systematic enclosure ensures that any large-scale data ingestion occurs through official channels rather than public-facing legacy tools.
