Resumption of Warfare in Khartoum and Darfur Despite Ceasefire

The Sudanese army said yesterday that the plot against the Sudanese state was grandiose and planned by parties at home and abroad, indicating success in preventing a failed attempt to seize power by force. that what has happened over the past two weeks has been a failed attempt to seize power in order to rule by force.

The statement confirms that the army has succeeded in derailing the project of taking over the Sudanese state throughout its history in favor of a one-man autonomy project.

He added that the army is working to create the proper conditions so that the police and other government agencies can resume their work, indicating that he is working to return life to normal as soon as possible.

And this at a time when the most dangerous conflict in Sudan is already on its 14th day, and there are no signs of a close resolution.

Despite the announcement of an extension of the truce, fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces continues in Khartoum and in the Darfur region in western Sudan, continuing since the middle of this month, killing hundreds of people. Some 574 people have died in the conflict, according to the latest figures, with 74 people reported killed earlier in the week in the city of El-Gadarif on Friday.

A preliminary committee statement from the Sudanese Doctors’ Syndicate on Friday said fighting in the city of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, had killed 74 people on Monday and Tuesday.

Activist organizations sounded the alarm about the situation in Darfur, where there are bloody battles, especially near the border with Chad.

Fighting broke out in El Geneina five days ago. The Darfur Bar Association reported the appearance of militants armed with “machine guns, RPGs and anti-aircraft missiles” in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, and said they “fired shells at houses”.

The Doctors Syndicate said in a statement that El Geneina saw “widespread looting and arson operations that affected markets, government and medical facilities, and the headquarters of voluntary and international organizations and banks.”

It stated that “the bloody events continue” in the city, “leaving dozens of dead and wounded.”

The United Nations has spoken of “distributing arms to the civilian population” in Darfur.

The United Nations, which suspended its operations in Sudan after five of its staff were killed in the early days of fighting, has warned that 50,000 “severely malnourished” children are being denied any food aid in Darfur.

It is difficult to get accurate information about what is happening in the region, which in 2003 witnessed years of bloody war between the forces of deposed former President Omar al-Bashir, in which the forces of the Janjaweed (the Rapid Support Forces led by Dagalo) and the rebels participated from ethnic minorities, resulting in nearly 300,000 deaths and the displacement of 2.5 million people.

In El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, doctors are doing their best to treat the large number of wounded who have been transferred to hospitals.

“The situation here is very, very complex,” said the coordinator of Médecins Sans Frontières in El Fasher.

And a Sudanese syndicate of doctors warned on Friday that a collapse of the country’s healthcare system is “inevitable” as more than 12,000 patients face the risk of death as they cannot receive regular dialysis.

Sudan’s health ministry statistics show 512 deaths and 4,193 wounded in the fighting, but observers estimate the death toll is higher.

In an interview with the American channel Al-Hurra, army commander Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan said that “mercenaries” are flowing across the borders from Chad, the Central African Republic and Niger to take advantage of the chaos in Sudan. .

For his part, Daglo said in an interview with the BBC: “The evidence is not credible,” he said, “this war is destroying Sudan.”

Triple and quadruple arrangements welcome de-escalation

In a joint statement released in Washington, members of the trilateral mechanism (African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations) and the quadripartite mechanism (Saudi Arabia, UAE, United Kingdom and United States) welcomed the willingness of the two parties to the conflict to “engage in dialogue to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities and unhindered humanitarian access.”

“This initial diplomatic phase will facilitate a permanent cessation of hostilities, humanitarian action and the development of a de-escalation plan,” the statement said.

For their part, several countries welcomed the extension of the ceasefire agreement and called for its full implementation. Egypt announced that a delegate from Al Burhan had arrived in Cairo to meet Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri.

The United States, whose diplomats mediate over the telephone between the two warring parties, has acknowledged the violation of the truce.

“However, enforcing the ceasefire is often difficult at first,” said State Department spokesman Vedant Patel. Violations of the ceasefire do not mean violations of the ceasefire.

The meeting of the two conflicting parties broke down at the last moment

Reuters reported that a group of mediators pushed for last-minute talks between Army Commander-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Buran and Commander of the Rapid Support Force Lt. Gen. Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo. weeks ago, but three Sudanese mediators said the two most powerful people in the country did not attend the meeting, which took place at the presidential residence in central Khartoum at ten o’clock in the morning on April 15 (Apr.), in details that are being revealed for the first time. Instead, fighting broke out across the country.

According to Reuters, citing three witnesses and adviser Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, the shooting began at the Soba military camp in southern Khartoum around 8:30 am local time.

Violence escalated rapidly across the country, showing how divided the two sides were in the weeks before they prepared for all-out war.

Through interviews with about a dozen sources in the army and the Rapid Support Forces, as well as officials and diplomats, Reuters reconstructed several major events in the pre-violence period, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 512 people. forced tens of thousands to flee and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The country is already suffering seriously.
