The high-octane, surreal action series Rooster Fighter (known in Japan as Niwatori Fighter) has expanded its reach in North America following its initial televised and streaming debuts earlier this year.
Based on the manga by Shu Sakuratani, which has been serialized by Hero’s Inc. since late 2020, the story presents a unique take on the monster-hunting genre. The series follows Keiji, a superpowered rooster with a tragic past and a strict code of honor. As a “wandering bird,” Keiji travels across Japan to defend humanity from “Kiju”—grotesque, demonic mutant monsters that threaten society.
While the premise may appear purely comedic, the production team behind the adaptation includes some of the industry’s most prominent names in serious action. Hiroshi Seko, the veteran writer responsible for the series composition of global hits such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, handled the composition for Rooster Fighter. This creative pedigree helps bridge the gap between the show’s absurd concept and its high-stakes battle sequences.
The anime was produced by Studio Sanzigen, utilizing 3D CGI animation to bring Keiji’s avian martial arts and the massive Kiju to life. The high-energy tone of the series is set by its opening theme song, “What’s a Hero?”, performed by DARUMA Rollin’.
Rooster Fighter originally made its North American debut on March 14, 2026, through Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block. It began streaming on Hulu the following day, March 15.
The rollout encompassed Adult Swim and Hulu, providing a platform for audiences to follow Keiji’s quest for vengeance.
