Sony Investigating “Various Options” for Streaming PlayStation Games Over the Internet

During an interview with the Financial Times, Yoshida stated that Sony would investigate “various options” for streaming PlayStation games over the Internet. Yoshida made this comment about the company’s plans.

The CEO of Sony has Warned That There Are Still Technical Concerns With Cloud Gaming_

The Challenges of Cloud Gaming

“I think the cloud itself is an amazing business model, but when it comes to games, the technical difficulties are high,” said Yoshida, citing latency as the most significant challenge. Latency is the time that passes between an action being inputted on the controller and displayed on the screen. “Although there will be difficulties associated with cloud gaming, we are excited to take on these difficulties.”

Yoshida also pointed out that due to the fluctuating popularity of gaming throughout the day, for instance, a large number of players all logging on when they finish work, it is financially inefficient to run when there are few players, and that, on the other hand, a large number of players logging on at the same time could lead to issues in performance. Yoshida emphasized that this is because the number of players logging on simultaneously could lead to performance issues.

Yoshida referred to these times as “the dark time” and said the following: “The dark time for cloud gaming had been an issue for Microsoft as well as Google, but it was meaningful that we were able to use those [quieter] hours for AI learning,” said Yoshida.

Aggressive Plans for Cloud Gaming

According to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, the company has “aggressive plans” for the cloud gaming industry, and he believes that details regarding these plans will be published over the course of the next few months.

In a recent interview, he stated, “We observe mobility in gaming habits to be an increasingly important trend, and the cloud will be fundamental to allowing us, or anybody else, to exploit that trend.” “The cloud will be fundamental to allowing us, or anybody else, to exploit that trend,” he added.

“We do have some fairly interesting and quite aggressive plans to accelerate our initiatives in the cloud space that will unfold over the coming months,” the company said in a statement. “Our plans will unfold over the coming months.”

PlayStation’s History with Cloud Features

PlayStation has been experimenting with cloud features for over a decade, and its PlayStation Now service, now folded into PS Plus, was one of the early pioneers in the space when it first launched.

The Future of Cloud Gaming

Although cloud gaming only accounts for a minor share of the overall games market, it is widely regarded as a market-shifting technology with significant long-term promise.

Notably, regulators have been investigating Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard because of its potential to provide the Xbox maker an advantage in the burgeoning field. This may represent a monopoly should the cloud become the predominant form of computing. Therefore they are concerned about the potential implications of this potential advantage.
