Afghan and Taliban supreme commander Hebatullah Akhundzada yesterday ordered women to wear the veil in public, one of the strictest restrictions placed on women since the extremist movement seized power again last year.
“They must wear veils (another name for veils) in accordance with tradition,” Akhundzadeh said in a decree that Taliban authorities told reporters in Kabul. The edict added that middle-aged women “should cover their faces, except for their eyes, as prescribed by the provisions of Shariah, when meeting non-prohibited men.”
The decree added that “it is preferable for women to stay at home” if they do not have important work abroad. During their first term from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban imposed similar restrictions on women.
