The Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Joaquim Kellem de Tambila, called on the African Union to “wake up”, condemning its “seeming absence” and “inconsistency with the reality of the peoples”. For 60 years now, he has been holding only meetings: he must wake up, ”the department quotes him.
“What is the African Union doing to support Burkina Faso?” he added. While our country is going through a difficult period, we are informed about the timing of the return to the constitutional order. And as for elections, he asked, elections, for what and for whom?
Since 2015, Burkina Faso has witnessed attacks by armed groups linked to Al-Qaida and ISIS that have killed thousands and displaced at least two million people.
The country, which has witnessed two military coups in 2022, is led by a transitional government created by a second coup by Captain Ibrahim Traore on September 30, 2022. It should hold elections to restore constitutional order in July 2024.
“In our current situation, we expect tangible solutions from the African Union,” the Prime Minister said, adding that “the African Union is characterized by its absence and more by words than by actions.”
“We want the support of the African Union, but we will continue on our way even if we don’t get it,” he said, stressing that “our priority is to fight terrorism and ensure the security of our lands.”
