Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hamedti), Deputy Head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, said the issue of the Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan could not be postponed, stressing the need to provide a solid basis for a final solution. after a joint meeting between Sudan and South Sudan on the Abyei issue. In Khartoum, according to the Sudanese news agency SUNA, yesterday. He pointed out the need to exchange views, build confidence between the two sides and continue coordination on this issue between the two sides.
Hamidti said: “Sudan is going through critical circumstances, but the issue of Abyei cannot be put off by the human suffering that the population of the region is facing.”
The Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council said that it is necessary to achieve positive results to resolve this issue and put the region on the path of a just and lasting peace, noting that the historical ties between the peoples of the region and the strategic relationship between the two countries encourage them to reach a final solution, in which the inhabitants of the region participate.
He continued: “The United Nations and the international community should help resolve this issue as soon as possible and make a trip to the region.”
The Abyei area was given special status under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of the Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and belonged to the state of West Kordofan, which was dissolved after the signing of the peace agreement.
The dependence of this oil-rich region has become a point of contention between the government and the popular movement, and its population consists of a mixture of Arab Misseri and Negro tribes, and it is considered a bridge between Khartoum and Juba.
The dispute between the two sides revolves around the Misseriya Arab tribe, who southerners say have not settled in Abyei, but rather move to Abyei to graze for a few months each year and then migrate north for the rest of the year.
