The Burial: A True Story Turned Courtroom Comedy

Currently available to watch online on Amazon Prime is the film The Burial, which is based on a true story. Jonathan Harr published a short tale in the New Yorker in 1991 that inspired this piece. The narrative of Jerry O’Keefe, a funeral homeowner in Mississippi who is the proprietor of many funeral houses, is told in the film The Burial. After decades in the industry, Jerry concludes that he would like to retire, and he makes a deal over a handshake with the president of a funeral home chain to sell his funeral houses. However, Jerry’s frustration levels rise when months pass without the contracts being signed or the deal being finalized. He needs the money to retire and wants to be freed from the duty of maintaining the houses daily. He is concerned that the chain is trying to drag out the transaction in the hopes that the value of the funeral homes will continue to decline, at which point they would make a lower purchase offer to him.

The Film Synopsis

Therefore, Jerry calls Willie E. Gary, a showy and influential attorney, to assist him in suing the funeral home chain and compelling them to finalize the contract so that Jerry can retire. The Burial is mostly a courtroom comedy about the actual litigation and the lawyers on both sides battling for their clients while also fighting a growing bond. This is because they are both Black lawyers in a predominantly Black county protecting white men’s interests. The Burial is a courtroom drama about the actual lawsuit and the lawyers on both sides. The cast of The Burial includes several well-known actors from Hollywood, such as Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx. Have a look at the whole form in the description below.

Tommy Lee Jones As Jerry O’Keefe

Jerry O’Keefe owns many funeral houses, all of which, after decades of success, are beginning to have difficulties. Jerry does not wish to continue working to expand the funeral homes and would instead leave. Because his handshake deal with the president of the Loewen group, which is situated in Florida, did not turn out precisely as he had planned, he ended up having to take legal action to try to compel the transaction to go through before the value of his funeral homes completely vanished.

Jerry O’Keefe is portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, famous for his stoicism and trademark voice. Jones has been nominated for an Academy Award four times and took home the award for his performance in The Fugitive. With a career spanning multiple decades, he is also one of the most recognizable performers in Hollywood today. Among his most well-known works are the movies “Men in Black,” “Natural Born Killers,” “JFK,” “No Country for Old Men,” and “The Fugitive.”

Pamela Reed As Annette O’Keefe

In the show, Pamela Reed portrays Annette O’Keefe, Jerry O’Keefe’s wife. She has no idea how much danger her husband’s company is in financially, but as the movie progresses, she discovers that her husband isn’t the man she thought she knew all along.

Pamela Reed has had roles in several movies and television episodes during her career. Still, the films Kindergarten Cop and Bean are the ones that have brought her the most significant recognition. In addition, she has appeared on popular television shows such as Jericho, Parks & Recreation, and NCIS: Los Angeles in various roles.

Jamie Foxx As Willie E. Gary

Jamie Foxx, a significant actor in the Hollywood scene, plays Willie E. Gary. Gary is the African-American attorney that O’Keefe retained to defend him against the Loewen group and its court head. O’Keefe engaged Gary. Willie E. Gary was the first person to be profiled in the New Yorker article that served as the basis for the movie. In an uncommon case, due to the racial undertones, location, and high stakes for O’Keefe, his showy personality and courtroom expertise made him the ideal lawyer to represent O’Keefe. He was the proper counsel to represent O’Keefe in the case.

Jamie Foxx has been active in the acting industry since 1992. He is well-known among viewers. A few of his most notable appearances were in the films Django: Unchained, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Baby Driver. In the movie Ray, he played the legendary musician Ray Charles.

Jurnee Smollett As Mame Downes

Mame Downs, the attorney who defends the Loewen group and its president in the case brought on by O’Keefe, is portrayed in the show by Jurnee Smollett, who plays the role in real life. Willie E. Gary faced a formidable opponent in the actual Mame Downes, who had a law degree from Harvard and was known for being a fierce litigator. Even though the two attorneys approached the courtroom differently, they respected one another. They did so even though certain aspects of their relationship were dramatized in the film.

Since childhood, Jurnee Smollett has maintained a career as a successful television actor. She has had roles in venerable sitcoms such as Full House and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, as well as productions such as Lovecraft Country, Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Amanda Warren as Gloria Gary

Willie E. Gary has a wife by the name of Gloria Gary. Her support and influence can be observed in her husband’s legal techniques and how he behaves in the courtroom. She is just as dramatic and full of life as her husband. The Good Wife, Law & Order, and Gossip Girl are just a few of the well-known television programs in which Amanda Warren has appeared. In addition, she has had appearances in the television shows The Leftovers, Madame Secretary, and The Purge.

Alan Ruck as Mike Allred

Jerry O’Keefe confides in Mike Allred, a buddy and the business attorney for Jerry O’Keefe. Alan Ruck, who has garnered a lot of praise in recent years for his performance as Connor Roy in the HBO drama Succession, returns to his comedic roots to play this part. Ruck is a fantastic comedy actor who earned hearts and laughter as Cameron, Ferris Bueller’s best buddy in the 1980s classic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Even though he is capable of delivering some devastating dramatic turns, Ruck is also an excellent dramatic actor. Ruck is a well-known actor who has been in films such as “Speed,” “Twister,” and “Young Guns.”

Bill Camp As Raymond Loewen

Raymond Loewen serves as the head of the Loewen Group, a chain of funeral homes worth many millions of dollars. After reaching a gentleman’s agreement with Jerry O’Keefe, he decides to delay the transaction to determine whether he can gain a financial advantage by allowing Jerry’s enterprises to struggle.

Many viewers have seen Bill Camp in the past; his appearance is typical. He has been in several well-known movies and television shows, including the Oscar-winning features 12 Years an enslaved person, Birdman, Vice, and Lincoln.

Mamoudou Athie As Hal Dockins

After O’Keefe understands that he needs a Black lawyer to represent him because the case is being heard in a county that is predominantly Black, Hal Dockins is the lawyer who introduces Willie E. Gary to O’Keefe and enables the two to work together. This occurs after O’Keefe realizes that the case is being heard in a predominantly Black county. Mamoudou Athie is a well-known actor who has appeared in several films, including The Get Down, The Detour, and Sorry for Your Loss.
