The match between Brazil and South Korea, which took place yesterday, on Monday, was the last match to be played at the 974 Stadium, which was purpose-built and temporarily designed to host Qatar at the World Cup final.
The stadium is planned to be dismantled after the final match and the end of the World Cup, after which the containers will be reused.
What does 974 mean?
The stadium was built using 974 shipping containers and this number is Qatar’s international dialing code.
According to some reports, the dismantled stadium can be sent to countries in need of infrastructure.
This stadium is the only stadium without air conditioning during the tournament, so all seven matches played there were played in the evening, when temperatures are relatively cooler than during the day.
The stadium has a capacity of 44,089 spectators and is located in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha.
The stadium is the first fully collapsible indoor football field.
In addition to the 974 Stadium, there are plans for other stadiums after the tournament ends as around 170,000 seats will be dismantled and donated to developing countries as Qatar’s aid to improve those countries’ sports infrastructure. Thus, 22 new stadiums are expected to be built in developing countries.
The Sustainability Strategy for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, launched by Qatar in collaboration with FIFA, aims to implement initiatives to host the first carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup, including obtaining a sustainable building certification in design, construction and operations management, as well as waste reduction, to achieve zero waste and support recycling efforts.
