The DSA: New Regulations for Social Networks in the European Union

The DSA Comes into Force on August 25, 2023

The Digital Services Act (DSA) is set to come into force on August 25, 2023 in the European Union. This new legislation will have significant implications for major platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, and Snapchat. Failure to comply with the DSA may result in fines and even bans from operating in the European market.

Removing Hateful Content

One of the key requirements of the DSA is for platforms to immediately remove all hateful content. Social networks, in particular, will need to reconsider their activities and algorithms to ensure the promotion of fake news, dangerous speech, or violent content is eliminated. The DSA aims to hold platforms accountable and prevent them from using the excuse of being mere middlemen.

Meta, the social network owned by Mark Zuckerberg, is currently blocked in France and neighboring countries due to the impending implementation of the DSA.

Content Moderation and Transparency

The DSA also mandates that platforms improve their content moderation practices. Social networks will be required to swiftly erase content involving hate speech, incitement to violence, and other illegal activities. The exact definition of hate content may be challenging to determine, but the DSA builds upon existing moderation practices.

Platforms will also need to become more transparent and accountable for their content moderation. The European Commission will oversee their compliance to ensure the prevention of systemic risks, such as the spread of illegal content, harm to individuals, interference in elections, and violations of fundamental rights.

Conclusion

The DSA represents a significant step towards regulating social networks and holding them accountable for the content they promote. With its implementation, platforms will need to adapt their operations to align with the new regulations, ensuring the safety and well-being of users in the European Union.
