The Friends of Sudan released a statement saying:
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America and the European Union, as members of the Group of Friends of the Sudan, welcome the signing of the Framework Agreement by broad political and military representation.
This framework agreement sets out the structures needed to return to a civilian-led transition to democracy and the military’s commitment to withdraw from politics.
The Friends of Sudan commends the efforts and compromises made by the signatories to reach this initial agreement and calls on all Sudanese stakeholders to continue their efforts towards a final political agreement and to form a credible civilian government as soon as possible.
The Friends of Sudan commends the role of the United Nations Integrated Transition Mission in the Sudan (UNITAMS), the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) (the “triangular mechanism”) for their efforts to help overcome the current political crisis. in Sudan and encourage the Tripartite Mechanism to continue to support Sudanese stakeholders in the next round of consultations by facilitating wide-ranging consultations and dialogue between the parties to lay the groundwork for a final agreement and address the important issues that have been agreed by the political agreement signatories. Friends of Sudan reminds that the success of the ongoing political dialogue depends on creating an enabling environment, including the release of detainees, support for freedom of expression, respect for the right to peaceful assembly without violence, and the participation of women and youth.
The Friends of Sudan reaffirms its commitment to supporting the political transition and realizing the aspirations of the Sudanese people for freedom, peace, justice and prosperity, and looks forward to renewed strategic cooperation and support in the formation of a new civilian-led government.
