Italian football club Empoli announced on Tuesday the signing of international striker Mattia Destro for a one-year contract after he was released from a previous contract with Genoa.
Empoli stated that Destro, 31, not bound by any contract, “signed a contract until June 30, 2023” after Genoa dumped him.
Destro made his last eight international appearances for his country in 2014, and his nine goals in 27 Serie A games last season didn’t stop Genoa from relegation to the second division.
Destro played for Rome, Milan, Siena and Bologna during a long stadium career, starting with Genoa in the 2010-2011 season.
Empoli, who will be managed by Paolo Zanetti next season after the departure of former manager Aurelio Andreazzoli, finished the Italian championship in 14th place, having been promoted to the first division after two seasons in the second.
Zanetti was sacked as Venezia manager last April after failing to save him from relegation.
