SPOILER ALERT:

This article contains spoilers for the season finale of “Ahsoka,” titled “The Jedi, the Witch and the Warlord,” now streaming on Disney+.

With the finale of “Ahsoka,” the latest chapter of the “Star Wars” TV universe has come to a close

and for fans of “Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels,” it gives some big moments that have been years in the making.

The bittersweet ending

The season finale, titled “The Jedi, the Witch and the Warlord,” ends on a bittersweet note, with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) escaping into space, while Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) are stranded on the planet Peridea. On one hopeful note, Ezra (Eman Esfandi) is back with his crewmate Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) for the first time since he disappeared in the “Rebels” series finale.

The episode’s beginning

The episode begins with Thrawn and the creepy Nightsisters bestowing a “gift of shadows” upon Morgan Elspeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and turning her into one of the evil witches. They also conjure up the Blade of Talzin, a powerful weapon last wielded by the Nightsisters’ leader Mother Talzin in “The Clone Wars.”

The battle against Thrawn

Ahsoka, Ezra and Sabine prepare for battle against Thrawn, the Nightsisters and their army of Night Troopers on Peridea. Ezra builds himself a new blue lightsaber, styled after his late “Rebels” mentor Kanan Jarrus, and the trio storm Thrawn’s Star Destroyer before he can escape. While the ragtag team chops down hordes of Night Troopers — Ahsoka using her twin white lightsabers, Ezra with his brand new saber and Sabine with Ezra’s old green saber — they run into one problem: The Nightsisters can resurrect their fallen soldiers with dark magic.

The power of the Force

The Jedi power through the waves of undead Night Troopers and finally face Morgan, who duels Ahsoka with the Blade of Talzin. Sabine gets held up by one of the zombies, but before it can deal a fatal blow, she harnesses the power of the Force to grab her lightsaber from several feet away and takes its head off. After previously struggling to tap into the mystical Force, Sabine can finally use the Jedi’s most powerful ability.

A daring rescue

And it turns out, she’s a fast learner! Sabine and Ezra chase down Thrawn’s Star Destroyer and have to make an impossibly far jump to board his vessel before it leaves. Ezra leaps half the distance, but before he plummets back down to the ground, Sabine uses the Force to launch him safely onto the ship. Instead of joining Ezra on board, though, Sabine goes back to help Ahsoka, who kills Morgan in a flashy lightsaber fight.

A narrow escape

With Morgan dead, Thrawn orders the Star Destroyer to rain lasers down on Ahsoka and Sabine. Luckily, their trusty droid Huyang (David Tennant) repaired their ship and rescues the Jedi and her former student just in time. With Ahsoka desperately trailing him, Thrawn taunts her with a reminder of her master Anakin Skywalker’s dark fate and heads into hyperspace before she can catch him. Defeated, Ahsoka and Sabine must turn back around to Peridea.

The heroes’ next move

At the end of the episode, Thrawn’s final destination is revealed: Dathomir, the home of the Nightsisters. Ahsoka and Sabine, stranded on Peridea, will need to be saved before they can stop him and whatever evil plot he and the Nightsisters are forming. The heroes’ fate may lie with Ezra, who disguised himself as a Stormtrooper and jetted off to reunite with Hera and the Resistance. The show closes with Sabine sensing “shadows in the starlight” out in the galaxy, and Ahsoka stares off in the distance as a Force ghost of Anakin (Hayden Christensen) appears watching over the heroes.
