The Incident and its Impact
The 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student, Sarah Katz, who suffered from long QT syndrome type 1, purchased the charged lemonade from a Philadelphia Panera Bread location on September 10, 2022. Several hours later, she went into cardiac arrest and unfortunately did not survive. Sarah’s roommate and close friend, Victoria Rose Conroy, stated that Sarah was diligent in following her doctors’ advice and avoided energy drinks due to her medical condition.
The Contents of the Charged Lemonade
The lawsuit reveals that the charged lemonade contained an alarming 390 milligrams of caffeine, surpassing the caffeine content of any size of Panera’s dark roast coffee. Additionally, the beverage included guarana extract, another stimulant, and the equivalent of nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar. Photos of the menu and beverage dispensers in the store, presented in the lawsuit, confirmed the advertised caffeine content and promoted the drink as a “plant-based and clean” alternative.
The Lawsuit’s Claims and Response
The lawsuit argues that Panera’s charged lemonade is a “dangerous energy drink” and highlights the absence of adequate warnings regarding its potential risks, such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, and impaired brain function.
