The United States Agrees to Rejoin UNESCO with Support from Member States

The 193 member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have come together in an extraordinary session of the organization’s General Conference to demand the re-accession of the United States. This move, however, faced opposition from 10 countries.

UNESCO, known for its efforts in promoting education, science, and culture, has been advocating for the United States’ return to the organization. In response to the demand, the United States has agreed to rejoin UNESCO.

Previous Withdrawals and Financial Contributions

It is worth noting that the United States has withdrawn from UNESCO twice before. The first withdrawal occurred in 1984, followed by another in 2003. On both occasions, the United States also ceased its financial contributions to the organization.

The primary reason behind these withdrawals was the protest against the granting of full membership to Palestine in 2011. The United States viewed this decision as undermining the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Consequently, the country decided to withdraw its substantial financial support.

A Renewed Commitment to UNESCO

However, in a significant turn of events, the Trump administration announced in 2017 its decision to withdraw from UNESCO once again. This withdrawal was set to take effect the following year.

Now, with the demand from member states and negotiations between the parties involved, the United States has agreed to rejoin UNESCO. As part of its commitment, the United States has agreed to fund 22 percent of the organization’s budget. This funding will not only cover the debt accumulated from the previous withdrawals but also contribute to various programs and initiatives.

Funding Programs and Initiatives

UNESCO has stated that the United States’ financial contributions will go towards supporting access to education in Africa and other regions. These voluntary contributions will play a crucial role in ensuring educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities and promoting cultural exchange.

The decision to rejoin UNESCO reflects a renewed commitment from the United States to international cooperation and the advancement of education, science, and culture. By rejoining the organization, the United States aims to contribute to global efforts in promoting peace, understanding, and development.

As the re-accession of the United States to UNESCO takes place, it marks a positive step towards strengthening multilateralism and fostering collaboration among nations.
