Ten workers were trapped inside a tunnel after part of it collapsed in the Himalayas in northeast India, an Indian-administered Kashmir official said Friday.
The tunnel is part of a mountain highway that was under construction when it collapsed Thursday night in the southern Ramban district, and rescuers used bulldozers to clear rubble and open a hole in the tunnel to rescue stranded workers.
The state disaster management agency said three workers trapped at the entrance to the tunnel when it collapsed were rescued, adding that rescuers took them to hospital for treatment.
And the Disaster Management Authority explained that the collapsed section of the tunnel is an air duct used to ventilate and transport supplies and equipment to the main tunnel, which is currently under construction.
The tunnel is part of an extensive network of bridges and tunnels built along a strategic highway connecting two major cities, Srinagar and Jammu.
