The Controversial First Version

In 2016, DC fans were thrilled to see the first adaptation of Suicide Squad in cinemas. Directed by David Ayer (known for Fury), the film featured an impressive performance by Jared Leto as the Joker. Although the movie achieved box office success, it received heavy criticism from reviewers, scoring only 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics claimed that the confusing plot, underdeveloped characters, and erratic direction undermined the talented cast. However, it appears that moviegoers did not witness the true version of the film.

A Release for Ayer’s Cut?

David Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad is said to be slightly longer than the released version and includes 45 minutes of never-before-seen footage. According to insiders who have seen it, the film showcases a more prominent presence of Batman and a grittier tone. Additionally, the character of Harley Quinn is portrayed differently, with a more empowering arc and less obsession with the Joker.

In recent news, James Gunn, the head of DC, has expressed his intention to give Ayer’s work another chance. The two filmmakers reportedly discussed the potential release of Ayer’s version, and positive developments have been reported. However, no official release date has been announced yet. Gunn’s current focus is on launching the DC Extended Universe, with Superman Legacy scheduled for 2025. This condition may not be acceptable for fans who believe that the Ayer’s Cut should be released sooner. They argue it is essential to heal old wounds before relaunching the franchise, especially considering the potential impact of the ongoing scriptwriters’ strike on schedules.
