Women Outnumber Men on U.S. Payrolls for Eighth Consecutive Month

The U.S. labor market is currently navigating a significant gender realignment, with women outnumbering men on payrolls for eight consecutive months as of September 2026. This shift comes amid a backdrop of cooling labor demand, as total nonfarm payrolls rose by just 29,000 in September—falling short of the 84,000 jobs expected by economists.

While the overall unemployment rate edged up to 4.2%, the underlying data reveals a stark divergence in how different sectors are absorbing labor. Over the 12 months ending in September 2026, the number of employed women increased by more than 650,000, while the number of employed men dropped by 1.2 million.

Sectoral Shifts and the Growth of Service Roles

The primary driver behind this trend is the concentration of growth in sectors where women traditionally hold a higher percentage of roles. In September, the health care and social assistance sectors added 23,000 jobs, accounting for nearly 80% of the month’s total net growth. These “HEAL” professions—health, education, and literacy—continue to see massive labor demand but remain significantly underrepresented by men. For instance, roles such as speech-language pathology remain approximately 95% female.

Conversely, male-dominated industries have faced steady contraction. Since December 2024, the mining, manufacturing, and transportation sectors have shed a combined 125,000 jobs. This industrial stall has directly impacted the prime-age (25-54) employment-to-population ratio for men, which dipped to 86.2% year-over-year.

The Role of AI Infrastructure in Construction

Construction has remained a rare bright spot for male-dominated sectors, largely insulated from the broader industrial slowdown by the ongoing buildout of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Data centers and specialized power facilities required for AI processing have sustained demand for trades and laborers. Without this specific infrastructure boom, job losses in physical goods-producing sectors would likely be more pronounced.

However, the gains in construction are not enough to offset the broader contraction in manufacturing or the rapid expansion of the female-led service economy. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the divergence between service-sector growth and industrial stagnation is now the defining feature of the post-2025 labor market.

Wage Growth and Inflationary Pressure

Financial pressure is also mounting for those currently employed. The structural shift away from manufacturing roles has raised concerns regarding the long-term participation of men in the workforce.

Research from the American Action Forum highlights that male-dominated sectors like mining, manufacturing, and transportation have shed 125,000 jobs since December 2024. This contraction, when contrasted with the growing healthcare and social assistance sectors, further widens the gap in economic security between the genders.
