Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that corruption, a chronic problem in the country, is unacceptable and vowed to make important decisions to eradicate it this week.
Ukraine has a long history of endemic corruption and unsustainable governance. The European Union has made anti-corruption reforms one of the main requirements for Ukraine’s accession after granting Kyiv candidate status last year.
“This week there will be time to make appropriate decisions. The decisions have already been prepared. I don’t want to publish them now, but everything will be fair,” Zelensky said in a video message.
Zelenskiy, who was elected by a landslide in 2019 on promises to change the way the former Soviet country is run, said his government accepted the deputy minister’s resignation after investigating allegations of bribery.
