President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would be a victory for the Union itself.
“Our rapprochement with the European Union is not only positive for us, it is the biggest contribution to the future of Europe in many years,” he added in a video message on Friday in Kyiv.
He said that only with Ukraine the EU will be able to ensure its strength, independence and development in the future.
On Friday, the Commission of the European Union recommended in Brussels to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate countries.
During Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Kyiv, Ukraine received the support of Germany, France, Italy and Romania.
The EU summit next week is crucial for Ukraine’s acceptance as a candidate for membership.
“We are one step closer to starting full-fledged integration into the EU,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky added that Ukraine’s values are European values, and “Ukrainian institutions remain stable even in times of war.”
Integration will have a positive impact on citizens, Zelensky said and continued: “The closer we are to other European countries, the more chances we have to provide a modern and secure life for all Ukrainians.”
