Syrian authorities have begun renovations at Damascus International Airport after damage caused by an Israeli raid led to the suspension of flights, the Syrian transport ministry said Friday night.
The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) said on Friday that “the aggression resulted in the injury of a civilian and damage to property,” not referring to the airport.
Yesterday, the Syrian Ministry of Transportation confirmed in a statement that the runways were put out of action after they were “damaged in more than one place and significantly” after the Israeli raid.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that Israeli bombings were aimed at warehouses belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces near the Damascus airport. He reported an escalation of fire from at least three places, indicating that there were wounded, without specifying their number and nationality. According to the observatory, the damaged runway is the only one that has been in operation at the airport since a second runway was damaged and out of service following Israeli strikes on cargo and weapons depots belonging to pro-Iranian groups on the airport campus in 2021.
And the press secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry considered on Friday evening that “the continuation of Israeli bombing of Syrian territories is an absolutely unacceptable violation of international standards.”
She added that Moscow strongly condemns “Israel’s provocative attack on essential civilian infrastructure,” which has “threatened the lives of innocent people.”
Satellite imagery posted on Twitter showed three separate areas of damage on both runways, one military and one civilian.
