IDF Issues 10-Page Response Denying Claims in Whistleblower Film ‘NAZA’

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a 10-page statement on October 1, 2026, characterizing the documentary “NAZA” as a “distorted and misleading” representation of military operations. This formal evaluation marks the first technical rebuttal from the Israeli military since the film premiered to international acclaim in early September.

The documentary, directed by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, draws its title from the Hebrew military acronym Nezek Agavi, which translates to “collateral damage.” The project gained significant visibility after winning the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival last month, where its depiction of AI-assisted warfare in Gaza sparked global debate.

Technical Rebuttals and AI Claims

The core of the IDF’s rebuttal focuses on the testimony of 24 Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers featured in the film.

One of the most contentious points in the documentary is the allegation that the military approved strikes with a projected ratio of up to 500 civilian casualties for a single high-value militant target. The IDF statement explicitly denied the existence of any such “500-to-1” casualty quota, stating that each strike undergoes a rigorous legal and operational review intended to minimize harm to non-combatants.

The military also addressed the use of artificial intelligence tools mentioned in the film, specifically a system referred to as “Lavender.” While the whistleblowers in “NAZA” claimed these systems effectively automated the selection of targets, the IDF countered that AI is used only to assist intelligence analysts. According to the military, these tools organize vast amounts of data for human review, but they do not independently authorize lethal action or select targets without human oversight.

Political Fallout and Legal Tensions

The release of “NAZA” has triggered a sharp response within the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the film, labeling it “antisemitic incitement.”

The IDF’s decision to issue a lengthy technical document nearly a month after the film’s premiere suggests a strategic shift toward addressing the specific operational allegations rather than relying solely on rhetorical dismissals. The military maintains that its procedures comply with international law and that the documentary relies on “fundamental errors” to build its case.
