The Los Angeles Times, citing a law enforcement source, said police were called after a shooting that killed 9 people on Saturday night in Monterey Park, California, to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year in Monterey Park.
Tens of thousands of people took part in the festival, which took place the day before.
Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, about 11 kilometers from downtown.
