Execs Discuss the Future of Telenovelas and the Impact of AI

Executives from Amazon Studios, TelevisaUnivision, and Televisa recently gathered at Conecta Fiction to debate the current state of the telenovela genre and how artificial intelligence (AI) will influence it in the near future.

During the panel titled ‘Mexico: Broadcasters & Platforms,’ Ángel Inzunza from Amazon Studios, Vanesa Rosas from TelevisaUnivision, and Guillermo Quesada from Televisa engaged in a lively discussion about the impact of streaming platforms on telenovelas. Alejandro Palma of Mestizo Lab moderated the panel, challenging the participants with thought-provoking questions about the television landscape in Mexico.
The Resilience of Telenovelas
Despite concerns that streaming platforms would spell the end for telenovelas, Quesada, a scriptwriter and content advisor for Televisa, highlighted that Televisa’s telenovelas continue to dominate global content sales and have been adapted in 130 countries. He emphasized that telenovelas are still thriving and remain a vital commercial business.
Embracing Melodrama
Inzunza from Amazon Studios acknowledged that melodrama is deeply ingrained in Mexico’s culture and suggested that Mexican content creators should explore developing melodramatic elements in various genres. He encouraged producers to focus on creating compelling stories that resonate with audiences.
Telenovelas on Streaming Platforms
Rosas, VP of streaming partnerships and business operations at TelevisaUnivision, revealed that telenovelas on ViX, TelevisaUnivision’s fast-growing streaming platform, are highly popular and often rewatched. She also shared that Televisa is monetizing its extensive library through FAST channels, adding value to previously shelved content.
The Controversy of AI
Discussing the role of AI, Rosas expressed the need for regulation and legalization in terms of creative issues. She emphasized that human emotions are irreplaceable and doubted that AI could fully replace screenwriters. Inzunza emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with AI technologies to overcome any fears or reservations.
Preserving Humanity in Content Creation
Quesada agreed that AI remains a controversial topic and stressed that telenovelas are designed to evoke emotions and feelings. He urged all writers and content creators to not let AI strip away their humanity and the essence of storytelling.
