Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti suffered a calf injury during Sunday’s French League game against Lyon and will therefore miss his country’s two-match European Nations League squad.
Italy, the main absentee at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, will host England next Friday before hosting Hungary on the 26th of this month.
Verratti was injured midway through the second half of the match against Lyon on a joint pass with striker Moussa Dembele, left limping and was replaced by manager Christophe Galtier with Nordi Mukiele.
Verratti left for Italy to join the national team and report the extent of his injury to Azzurri’s medical staff, and the latter decided that he could not coach Roberto Mancini to play two matches.
Saint-Germain released an official statement in which he confirmed: “Verratti has a bruised left shin. He will be taken care of at the club’s training headquarters”, noting that Saint-Germain’s medical staff are “working in cooperation with the Italian team’s medical staff”. Verratti has played all of his team’s matches since the start of the current season.
