Botched Execution Leaves Tennessee Death Row Inmate Christa Pike on Ventilator

Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, remains unconscious and intubated in a Nashville-area hospital following a failed execution attempt. As of October 3, 2026, Pike is breathing with the assistance of a ventilator after a September 30 attempt to carry out her death sentence by lethal injection resulted in catastrophic medical complications.

According to medical reports and statements from her legal team, Pike’s arms were severely swollen, burned, and blistered upon her arrival at the hospital. Medical staff are currently attempting to clear two doses of pentobarbital from her system. The sedative reportedly failed to enter her bloodstream correctly, instead leaking into her muscle and skin tissue—a condition often referred to as “blown veins.”

Legal representatives are seeking to preserve physical evidence from the execution chamber.

In the immediate aftermath of the event, Governor Bill Lee halted all state executions through the end of 2026. This moratorium marks a significant shift in state policy following a similar pause in 2022 that also involved protocol oversight issues.

Witnesses and legal representatives described a harrowing scene during the eight-hour window on September 30. After a temporary stay of execution was lifted by the U.S. Supreme Court, the state’s execution team reportedly struggled for hours to establish a viable IV line. Pike’s lawyers claim the team used at least seven needles and that one needle was discovered bent at a 90-degree angle.

The subsequent hospitalization and the governor’s executive order have triggered intense scrutiny of the IV team’s training and performance.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. While she remains the only woman facing capital punishment in Tennessee, her long-term prognosis is unknown, and the legalities of a second execution attempt remain unresolved while she is in critical condition.
