Jessie T. Usher Feared His Role in The Boys Would End His Hollywood Career

Jessie T. Usher, known for his portrayal of the speedster A-Train, recently revealed that he expected his role in The Boys to be a career-ending move rather than a breakout success. Speaking at a FanX panel in September 2026, Usher admitted that the subversive and graphic nature of the series’ debut season left him questioning his future in Hollywood.

Usher’s concerns were primarily rooted in the pilot episode’s most infamous moment: the violent death of Robin Ward. As the character responsible for the accidental collision that sets the series’ plot in motion, Usher feared the public and the industry would react negatively to such a jarring introduction. Despite these initial anxieties, the series became a cornerstone of modern streaming television, concluding its five-season run on May 20, 2026.

A-Train’s Final Arc

The actor’s journey with the series reached a definitive conclusion during the Season 5 premiere on April 8, 2026, when A-Train died. The character’s exit marked the culmination of a redemption arc that spanned the entire series, moving from the reckless figure responsible for the death of Hughie Campbell’s girlfriend to a character who eventually attempted to rectify his past actions.

During the FanX panel, Usher reflected on the “full circle” nature of the role. While he initially worried that being the face of the show’s most graphic early scene would lead to being sidelined by the industry, the role instead served as a platform for more traditional dramatic work. Other cast members, including Chace Crawford, have previously noted the high level of uncertainty the cast felt regarding the show’s unique tone during its production in 2018 and 2019.

Transition to Pulse

The actor’s fears of a shortened career proved unfounded as he transitioned directly into new projects following the wrap of the superhero series. Usher now stars in the Netflix medical drama Pulse, which debuted in 2026. In the new series, he portrays Dr. Sam Elijah, a significant shift from the high-octane, morally ambiguous world of Vought International.

The contrast between his initial fear of the 2019 series premiere and his current status in a lead role on a major medical drama highlights the industry’s shift in perception regarding subversive content. As The Boys universe continues through various spin-offs, Usher’s career has moved into a more conventional leading-man trajectory, solidified by his work in Pulse and the 2022 horror hit Smile.
